Art Shimata

Art Shimata has been in the medical field since 1991. He started as an Airforce medic
transitioned to nursing shortly thereafter. After his 7 years working as a nurse mostly in
the critical care field Art Shimata graduated from Gonzaga University with his Masters in
Anesthesia Education in 2002. Since then, Art obtained his Doctorate in Nurse
Anesthesia Practice from Midwestern in 2018. Art has served on the UANA as the
federal political director, and board member for two terms now. His focus is on being
open and willing to listen to the members.

Art’s professional practice includes owning his own business where he is able to
currently practice anesthesia. Art has also worked as a Certified Registered Nurse
Anesthetist at Ogden Regional Medical Center in Ut., Parker Adventist Hospital in CO.,
Rose Medical Center in CO, along with many other locum assignments throughout UT,
CO, WA, KS, TX, and NM. Additionally, Art was an Army officer doing anesthesia for the
military for several years. Art has practiced in many different settings to include a
collaborative Anesthesiologist/Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), CRNA
only, and even solo practice. He has done all types of cases and at one time even
practice in the area of chronic pain management. In addition to practicing, Art is
Assistant Director and teaches for Westminster College’s MSNA program.

Art is originally from Hawaii, has 6 children and one grandchild and one on the
way. Art has been happily married to his wife Terri since 1989. He has two Weimaraner
dogs named Luke and Cody. He loves to go boating, camping, hiking, backpacking and
riding his ATV and Razor. You may see Art riding his Harley to work, or who knows on a
road trip to Sturges. He has also been known to road cycle and a play racquetball.
However, if you really want to distract him, get him to talk about surfing big waves at the
Pipeline, Waimea Bay or Sunset beach in Hawaii.
